Information Technology

Information technology (IT) is the discipline that deals with all elements of information management and processing, particularly within a big organization or enterprise. IT is more commonly associated with business technology than with personal or home computers and networking.

IT is commonly used in reference to computers and computer networks, but it also refers to all levels of a company’s systems, from physical hardware to operating systems, programs, databases, storage, and servers. Internet, phones, and cellular networks are all examples of telecommunication technologies that are part of an organization’s IT architecture.

People usually need a college diploma or a certificate to start a job in information technology. Degrees in information technology include:

  • Computer science
  • Management of information systems
  • Systems and network administration
  • Computers engineering
  • Software engineering
