Medicine and Health

In terms of both the approach to the topic and the timetable to certification, medicine is taught differently in the Netherlands than it is in the United Kingdom. While a Dutch medical degree will be respected equally to one earned at a British medical school, the way students are trained makes shifting between the two nations in the middle of your studies nearly difficult.

In the Netherlands, there are three primary stages on the way to becoming a doctor in general practice:

  • Bachelor of Science in Medicine (3 years)
  • Master’s degree in medicine (an additional 3 years)
  • Training (one year)

While these degrees are taught in English, you must study Dutch in addition to your other subjects; the Dutch language is an intrinsic element of the degree, and you must pass language tests in order to graduate.
