One of the biggest queries for students planning to go for abroad studies is: “Can I work after I graduate?”
Post-study work, also known as PSW, allows international students to live and work in the country they have graduated from for up to two years (three for PhDs). It aims to allow students to gain international work experience, recover tuition investment, and in some cases, apply for permanent residency (PR).
Different countries have different rules regarding Post Study Visa. Here are few details about rules for PSW in different countries.
United Kingdom
Because of its Graduate Route visa, the UK has emerged as one of the most popular study destinations for Nepali students. After finishing their education, international students can stay in the UK with this visa. Bachelor’s and master’s degree holders are permitted to remain and work in the UK for a maximum of two years, while PhD holders are permitted to stay for a maximum of three years. Graduates might look for long-term employment prospects or work in any sector during this time. If students find a job that satisfies the requirements, they can convert to a skilled worker visa once the Graduate Route period expires.
Canada
Canada is another highly preferred destination for Nepali students because of its welcoming immigration policies and strong job market. The country offers the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) program, which allows international graduates to gain valuable work experience. If a student completes a program that is two years or longer, they may receive a work permit of up to three years. For shorter programs, the work permit is generally issued for the same duration as the study program.
Australia
Australia is renowned for providing both strong post-study employment options and top-notch education. After finishing their studies, international students can apply for the Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485). While master’s degree holders may be granted two to three years of post-study employment privileges, bachelor’s degree holders can often remain and work for up to two years. PhD holders are permitted to remain for a maximum of three years.
New Zealand
New Zealand offers a Post-Study Work Visa that allows graduates to stay and work after completing their studies. Students who complete bachelor’s or postgraduate degrees may receive up to three years of work rights depending on their qualification and study program. This opportunity allows graduates to gain valuable work experience.
United States
The United States offers post-study work opportunities through the Optional Practical Training (OPT) program. This program allows international students to gain practical work experience related to their field of study. Students can work for up to 12 months under the standard OPT program. However, graduates from STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) programs may qualify for an additional 24-month extension, allowing them to work for up to 36 months in total.
