As a Recent +2 Graduates, How to Start Preparation for English Proficiency Test?

English Proficiency Tests (EPTs) are one of the initial steps for your abroad study process. While learning English is not rocket science, knowing where to begin the preparation might be tricky.

If you are planning to take a proficiency test and don’t know where to start, here is the step wise guide that can help you kickstart your test preparation;

Step 1 – Know which test is right for you.

While there are variants of EPTs such as IELTS, PTE, TOEFL, Duolingo etc., taking one test is enough. Choosing the right test that is required for the university or country you are applying to is the first step to take. For this you can research about the countries or university’s requirement or simply have a talk with your education consultant, which will help you make the right choice.

Step 2 – Know the test format and scoring system

All major English tests have 4 modules:

  1. Writing
  2. Listening
  3. Reading
  4. Speaking

Once you determine which test suits you best, you need to understand the test format, its marking criteria, scoring system and timings. You can find this information on the official test websites.

Step 3 – Take a full mock test

Taking a mock test before starting your test preparation will help you assess your level, identify the weak areas and determine whether you need expert guidance or can prepare by yourself. Determine which section requires more preparation and effort before starting the actual preparation.

Step 4- Join preparation classes

Preparation classes are not mandatory; they should be chosen based on your needs. If you feel like you need help with writing structure, confidence, or time management, expert guidance might just be what you need. With proper help, you will have a chance of scoring higher score increasing chance of securing a visa.

Step 5- Improve your vocabulary and grammar

While preparation classes can be your savior, self-practice is equally important. Foundational skills like vocabulary and grammar should be focused on, as these are the most integral part of learning any language. To score higher, you should:

  • Learn new academic vocabulary (5-10) daily
  • Practice sentence structures
  • Read English articles and newspapers
  • Listen to podcasts and TED talks regularly

You need to strengthen these skills if you want to score higher, and in general, improve your overall communication skills.
