What is Homesickness?

The emotional distress you feel when you’re away from your home, family, and daily routines is homesickness. It includes feelings of nostalgia, sadness, loneliness, and longing for the comfort of home. For many of the students, studying abroad is also the first time leaving their home. While feeling homesick is a natural and common experience when you move away from familiar surroundings to a completely new place, it may sometimes create disruption to your regular life, impacting your studies and quality of life. Missing home can be tough, but you can overcome with time and the right strategies.

How to get over it?

Homesickness sometimes may be scary, but you need to understand that it is only short-term and a natural part of the adjustment process. With time and patience, you’ll start to feel at home in your new environment. What once felt foreign may become familiar and even beloved. One can overcome this with proper guidance.

  1. Acknowledge Your Feelings: It is completely normal to feel overwhelmed during the initial phase of studying abroad. However, remember to give yourself permission to feel and process your emotions because once you do, it will be easier for you to deal with them.
  1. Stay Connected: You will be far from your family, sometimes maybe for the first time. So, keep in touch with family and friends back home through calls or messages. If possible, find groups of students from your country (most countries have one) and join them. This way you will feel less lonely.
  1. Embrace the Local Culture: Since you are already in new surroundings, try to accept and enjoy it. Explore local foods, attend festivals, and learn about local customs. The more you engage, the more comfortable you’ll become.
  1. Learn the Language: If you are in a country where different languages are spoken, learn the basics of that language. This way you can communicate with local people, and it will help you feel more connected.
  1. Establish a Routine: Create a new routine that blends both your old and new life. Once you get used to it slowly, your brain will automatically help you to feel less disconnected.
  1. Seek Support: If the loneliness is overwhelming and distracting from your daily life, seek professional help. Most universities have student support services. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to the helping bodies, if you need help adjusting.
  1. Set Small Goals: Sometimes creating a to-do list and future plans can help fight homesickness. It will keep you distracted and, at the same time, more focused on your future rather than your past.
  1. Take care of yourself.: Self-care is very important and more so once you are away from home and by yourself. This also includes eating and sleeping well and exercising. Don’t lose yourself while moving toward your future.

These above-mentioned steps can be followed to overcome your home sickness. Please keep in mind that all the hardship that you face now is for your own better future. Study and work, and also make sure to take care of your physical, mental, and emotional health.

Good luck!
